I saw an article that was talking about Taylor Swift the other day and they called her writing style a "dear diary writing style" and it got me MAJORLY thinking...
Who is the biggest artist around right now?
Taylor Swift.
Who has been touring for like 2 years and selling out stadiums everywhere she goes?
T-Swift.
Who has a dedicated group of fans that support her and love her and love her songs no matter what?
You guessed it...the future Mrs. Travis Kelce.
And what does she do that's SO VERY DIFFERENT from everyone else?
She doesn't write relatable songs!
Like, take any other artist; sure, they're writing (or performing) songs that they resonate with but MOST keep everything super generic and broad so that others can relate to the songs.
Not Tay Tay.
We don't relate to her running off the stage with her dress unbuttoned or performing for thousands with a broken heart. I can't relate to her experience with Kim Kardashian or dating an NFL player.
But that's what she sings about.
Because she's writing in a Dear Diary style, not in a "I'm going to sing about things that are relevant to me but keep them broad so others relate" style.
And guess what?
Her fans don't care! Her fans LOVE knowing about her life through her music. Her fans FIND ways to relate to the songs and lyrics. Her fans don't need to relate.
So what's my point?
I think as creators we MISS this part so much.
We try and niche down and make everything super relatable and not do anything that we think is just pertinent to us and not others.
Because we're trying to appeal to the masses.
But, the masses want US.
They're tired of following creators that are all the same, they want originality, they want people that are fun to watch, not copycats of everyone else.
They don't want relatable, they want REAL.
They want to know about your real life, they want that.
And, I could even go on another leg of this rant and loop into my video about how to tell better stories and tell you that even though Ms. Swift writes songs about her life, she's not chronicling things in order and just giving you a run-down; she's giving you a story, she's being creative, she's hooking you and wanting you to pay attention. You'll have to watch the video to really get what I mean here.
This is something I'm DEFINITELY going to be challenging myself to do and I challenge you to do it too!
